The Natural History Museum of Comiso is largely composed of the collection of Gianni Insacco. Among the most valuable pieces are some cetaceans and the remains of the now famous “dwarf elephant,” which was found and discovered by Insacco himself about 15 years ago, in an area near Comiso and which attests to the presence of elephants in Sicily in prehistoric times.
Located in the suggestive setting of the former fish market in Piazza delle Erbe, the Civic Museum of Natural History of Comiso, with its over 7,000 fossil vertebrate and invertebrate specimens from the Quaternary, is the seventh most important museum in Italy.
