The Natural Sciences Museum of Comiso is largely composed of Gianni Insacco’s collection. Among the most valuable pieces are some cetaceans and the remains of the now famous “dwarf elephant,” which was discovered by Insacco himself about 15 years ago in an area near Comiso, testifying to the presence of elephants in Sicily during prehistoric times.
Housed in the evocative setting of the former fish market in Piazza delle Erbe, the Civic Museum of Natural History of Comiso, with its over 7,000 fossil remains of vertebrates and invertebrates from the Quaternary period, is the seventh most important museum in Italy.
