Established by DPR no. 233 of November 26, 2007, and regulated by the DM of October 7, 2008, the Central Institute for Sound and Audiovisual Heritage (ICBSA) of Rome succeeded the State Discotheque, from which it acquired “the competencies, personnel, financial and instrumental resources, equipment, and technical and documentary material.”

The ICBSA is tasked with documenting, enhancing, and preserving the national sound and audiovisual heritage, implemented by the legal deposit provided for by Law no.106 of April 15, 2004.

Its collection currently consists of over 300,000 media: from wax cylinders invented by Edison, to records, tapes, videos, up to current digital media. It also preserves a very rich collection of historic sound reproduction instruments: phonographs, gramophones, and other devices from the late 1800s to the 1950s.

The ICBSA is also responsible for formulating standards and guidelines regarding the conservation and management of sound and audiovisual assets, promoting, also in collaboration with other national and international institutions, training activities and technical-scientific insights in its fields of competence.
