Established by Presidential Decree no. 233 of November 26, 2007, and regulated by the Ministerial Decree of October 7, 2008, the Central Institute for Sound and Audiovisual Heritage (ICBSA) in Rome succeeded the State Record Library, acquiring “the expertise, personnel, financial and instrumental resources, equipment, and technical and documentary materials”.

ICBSA is responsible for documenting, enhancing, and preserving the national sound and audiovisual heritage, implemented through the legal deposit established by Law no. 106 of April 15, 2004.

Its collection currently consists of over 300,000 media: from wax cylinders invented by Edison, to records, tapes, videos, up to current digital media. It also preserves a very rich collection of historic sound reproduction instruments: phonographs, gramophones, and other devices from the late 19th century to the 1950s.

ICBSA is also tasked with formulating standards and guidelines for the conservation and management of sound and audiovisual assets, promoting training activities and technical-scientific research in its fields of expertise, also in collaboration with other national and international institutions.
