The establishment of the Institute dates back to February 15, 1973, as a Section of the State Archive of Cagliari; with the establishment of the Province of Oristano, in 1974, it became the State Archive of Oristano. The most significant archival collections are those of the Court (1839-1948), the Military District (1880-1927), and the Treasury Technical Office (1850-1912). Among the oldest documents is a donation from Judge Pietro II of Lacon Serra, dated 1228, belonging to the Collection of the San Martino Hospital of Oristano.
