The museum is located inside the eighteenth-century fort Carlo Emanuele III, built in the spring of 1738, the first masonry construction of the then newly established town of Carloforte. Built in the center of a natural acropolis and arranged as a guardhouse, over time it was used as the district prison.
The fort has been completely restored to house the museum, which currently includes six rooms and a garden. The Tonnara Room contains artifacts and tools related to tuna fishing, a model of a tonnara, built by an old rais, which clearly depicts the “calato,” that is, the set of anchors and nets that form a gigantic rectangular structure stretching from the seabed to the surface. A scale model of the nineteenth-century Portopaglia plant is also on display, faithfully reproducing the various stages of tuna processing and preservation. In the Galanzieri Room, a series of historical documents about the boatmen, or galanzieri, and the main tools used during navigation and for the collection and transport of ore with sailing boats are exhibited. The Documents Room contains historical documents from the early years of the colonization of the island of San Pietro. The malacological room is very interesting as it includes a fascinating and extensive collection of Mediterranean shells, particularly from the southwestern Tyrrhenian. The tour ends with the Peasant Activities Room with artifacts and typical tools of peasant life and the Emanuelli Room, which exhibits the collection of paintings by the artist Mario Emanuelli.
