The archaeological area houses the monumental remains of the city of Metapontum, founded by the Achaeans during the second half of the 7th century BC.
It includes the urban sanctuary, part of the agora, and the north-south road axis on which the entire urban layout is based.
The sacred area is characterized by temple buildings in Doric style (Temple of Hera and Temple of Apollo) and Ionic (Temple of Artemis) and a small shrine probably dedicated to Athena, built from the 6th to the 5th century BC. In the agora, the architectural grandeur of the theater stands out, which in the 4th century BC replaced an archaic building used for citizen assemblies.
Between the agora and the line of the eastern walls lies the Roman Castrum, probably the seat of a Roman military garrison in the 3rd century BC.
