The archaeological area houses the monumental remains of the city of Metapontum, founded by the Achaeans during the second half of the 7th century B.C.
It includes the urban sanctuary, part of the agora, and the north-south road axis on which the entire urban layout is based.
The sacred area is characterized by temple buildings in Doric style (Temple of Hera and Temple of Apollo) and Ionic (Temple of Artemis) and by a small shrine probably dedicated to Athena, built from the 6th to the 5th century B.C. In the agora, the architectural grandeur of the theatre stands out, which in the 4th century B.C. replaced an archaic building intended for city assemblies.
Between the agora and the line of the eastern walls lies the Roman Castro, probably the seat of a Roman military garrison in the 3rd century B.C.
