According to Article 7 of the regulation issued following the law of November 12, 1818, in the latter Archive, judicial documents, that is, those from the courts that were seated in Trani separately from Bari, were supposed to be consolidated under the supervision of the King’s prosecutor.
In reality, due to space reasons, the State Archive of Bari has also housed documents of the Sacred Royal Audience and other magistracies that were based in Trani. With the Royal Decree of September 22, 1932, no. 1391, the Provincial Archive of Bari became the Provincial State Archive; with the law of December 22, 1939, no. 2006, it became a State Archive Section, and with the Presidential Decree of September 30, 1963, no. 1409, it became the State Archive.
The archives preserved here do not of course exhaust the documentation related to Bari and other locations of the current province: particular reference should be made to the collections preserved at the Naples State Archive.
