The castle is reachable on foot via an ancient path (approx. 15 minutes) from the village of Waidbruck, or by following an easy route (approx. 25 minutes) from the cemetery along the gallery leading into Val Gardena. Built in the 12th century as a castle, it was later expanded in the 14th and 15th centuries. The manor was also home to the brother of the famous medieval poet Oswald von Wolkenstein and has been owned by the ‘Südtiroler Burgeninstitut’ since 1967. The castle as it appears to us today is a typical example of a fortified residence with Renaissance-style elements. Unchanged over time, this magnificent structure combines the features of a fortress with those of a noble residence. A visit to the castle also offers the opportunity to admire about eighty models of South Tyrolean castles created by Ludwig Mitterdorfer (1885-1963).
