The castle is reachable on foot via an ancient path (approx. 15 min.) from the locality of Ponte Gardena, or by following an easy route (approx. 25 min.) that runs alongside the cemetery and the tunnel leading to Val Gardena. Built in the 12th century as a castle, it was later expanded in the 14th and 15th centuries. The manor was also home to the brother of the famous medieval poet Oswald von Wolkenstein and has belonged to the ‘Südtiroler Burgeninstitut’ since 1967. The castle as it appears to us today is a typical example of a fortified residence with Renaissance-style elements. Unaltered over time, this magnificent structure combines characteristics of fortification with those of a noble residence. The visit to the castle also offers the opportunity to admire about eighty models of South Tyrolean castles created by Ludwig Mitterdorfer (1885-1963).
