The Archaeological Park of San Leucio, located on a hill southeast of Canosa, undoubtedly represents one of the most important historical and archaeological testimonies in the area. The hill first saw the construction of a large Italic temple dedicated to the goddess Minerva, destroyed at the end of the 5th century AD. Later, on the ruins of the temple, a paleochristian basilica with a central plan was built, initially dedicated to the Holy Medics Cosmas and Damian and only later to S. Leucio. The two buildings situated outside the ancient city are today part of a site where numerous archaeological researches have been conducted, many including excavation campaigns by “Sapienza – University of Rome.” In 2008, the Antiquarium was inaugurated within the Archaeological Park of San Leucio, housing many artifacts derived from the Temple of Minerva and the Christian basilica.
