Located between the provinces of Free State and North West, lands of Boer colonization, defined by endless prairies mainly suitable for livestock farming and cornfields, Rustenburg enjoys relentless sunshine for almost the entire year and villages where time seems to have stood still.
The history of Rustenburg is deeply connected to Paul Kruger, who has always been considered the “father of the nation” by the Boers.
1 What to See in Rustenburg
In Rustenburg, be sure to visit the imposing Dutch Reformed Church, registered as a national monument and a testament to the history of the Boer settlers, also known as voortrekker.
2 Kruger Estate
About twenty kilometers northwest lies the locality of Boekenhoutfontein, home to the original Kruger Estate, partially converted into a museum with four buildings open to the public, including the oldest cottage in the Transvaal, dating back to 1841, and two of the world’s largest platinum mines. In 2010, it hosted the FIFA Football World Cup.
