The cisterns are located beneath the current Piazza Matteotti, corresponding to the Roman-era public square (forum), at the northern edge of the town of Amelia.
This is the main hydraulic engineering monument designed in Roman times, which visitors can explore through an evocative journey into underground Amelia, discovering the underground cultural heritage.
The imposing structure was built between the 2nd and 1st centuries BC, when Amelia was elevated to the status of a municipality and equipped with a series of functional infrastructures (walls, terraces, roads).
It consists of a large rectangular space (57.50 x 19.60 meters) divided into ten parallel rooms covered with barrel vaults (averaging 5.70 meters high) carved into the limestone rock and subsequently internally lined with masonry in opus incertum. It is characterized by a core of concrete and a facing of roughly hewn stones embedded in the core. Exceptional is its state of preservation, with all the fundamental components for the functioning of the entire complex still in situ, including the water supply system, the internal device for regulating the maximum water level, and the system for emptying the cistern.
