The Jamaican locality received its name Negrillo (later shortened to Negril) towards the end of the 15th century from the Spanish. However, its tourist fortune only began in the 1960s and 1970s, when it was invaded by North American hippies. In those years, the first hotels and resorts were built, including an all-inclusive for nudists that later became famous for its rather uninhibited style.
Today Negril is a preferred destination especially among American students, who choose it for their ‘spring break’, the week of vacation granted to them at the beginning of spring.
Those who choose Negril as the destination of their trip definitely opt for a holiday focused on beach relaxation, contact with nature, and fun.
Its Seven Miles Beach, meaning the long beach with very fine and soft sand, has always attracted many tourists, placing Negril among the top ten best beaches in the world.
Negril also offers services for every budget: from budget bungalows to sumptuous suites. More precisely, the northern side reserves luxurious and all-inclusive hotels for visitors, while the southern side offers smaller, family-run hotels. If you want more privacy, you must head to West End Road, just south of the center. This area is also known as ‘the cliff’ and thrilling dives are performed here from a maximum height of 12 meters.
Besides the splendid black cliffs and the fabulous Caribbean waters, Negril also offers additional attractions thanks to parks (with go-karts, mini-golf, rides, pedal boats and much more) and aquatic sports centers (where you can scuba dive, snorkel, fish, water ski, sail, and even take cruises).
Don’t forget the lighthouse, a symbol of Negril, which offers breathtaking views especially at sunset thanks to warm tropical colors.
To fully enjoy the Jamaican locality, it is recommended to get involved in the rhythm of reggae music, savor the local cuisine influenced by Anglo-Indian flavors (especially for the use of curry), and why not, ‘negrilize’ your look (especially your hair) with beads and shells typically used by the locals.
