The Jamaican locality received its name Negrillo (later shortened to Negril) towards the end of the 15th century from the Spaniards. Its tourist fortune, however, only began in the ’60s and ’70s of the twentieth century, when it was invaded by hippies from North America. In those years, the first hotels and resorts were built, including an all-inclusive for nudists that later became famous for its somewhat daring style.
Today Negril is especially a favorite destination for American students, who choose it for their ‘spring break’, that is, the week of vacation granted to them at the beginning of spring.
Those who choose Negril as the destination of their trip definitely opt for a holiday characterized by beach relaxation, contact with nature, and fun.
Its Seven Miles Beach, meaning the long beach with very fine and soft sand, has always attracted many tourists, placing Negril in the top ten of the best beaches in the world.
Negril also offers services for all budgets: from economical bungalows to luxurious suites. More precisely, the northern side reserves luxurious and all-inclusive hotels for visitors, while the southern side offers smaller, family-run hotels. If you want more privacy, you should head to West End Road, a little south of the center. This area is also known as ‘the cliff,’ and from here exciting dives are made from a maximum height of 12 meters.
In addition to the splendid black cliffs and fabulous Caribbean waters, Negril also offers additional attractions thanks to parks (with go-karts, mini-golf, rides, pedal boats, and much more) and aquatic sports centers (where you can indulge in scuba diving, snorkeling, fishing trips, water skiing, sailing, and even cruises).
Let’s not forget the lighthouse, symbol of Negril, which offers breathtaking views especially at sunset thanks to the warm tropical colors.
To fully enjoy the Jamaican locality, it is recommended to get involved with the rhythm of reggae music, savor the local cuisine with Anglo-Indian influences (especially for the use of curry) and, why not, to ‘negrilize’ your look (especially your hair) with beads and shells typically used by the locals.
Negril: Jamaica on Seven Miles Beach
Negril is one of the most recent tourist destinations in Jamaica, located on the western tip of the island immersed in the Caribbean Sea. Although its past was more than a century old, Negril only became known towards the second half of the 1900s.
