The Jamaican location received its name Negrillo (later shortened to Negril) towards the end of the 15th century from the Spaniards. However, its tourist fortune began only in the ’60s and ’70s of the twentieth century, when it was invaded by hippies from North America. In those years, the first hotels and resorts arose, among which an all-inclusive for nudists later became famous for its rather bold style.
Today Negril is a preferred destination especially for American students, who choose it for their ‘spring break’, the vacation week granted to them at the beginning of spring.
Those who choose Negril as their travel destination surely opt for a holiday focused on beach relaxation, contact with nature, and fun.
Its Seven Miles Beach, that is, the long beach with very fine and soft sand, has always attracted many tourists, ranking Negril in the top ten of the best beaches in the world.
Negril also offers services for all budgets: from economical bungalows to sumptuous suites. More precisely, the northern side offers luxurious and all-inclusive hotels to visitors, while the southern side has smaller, family-run hotels. If one wants more privacy, they should head to West End Road, just a bit south of the center. This is also known as ‘the cliff’ and here, thrilling dives from a maximum height of 12 meters are performed.
Besides the splendid black cliffs and the fabulous Caribbean waters, Negril also offers additional attractions thanks to parks (with go-karts, mini-golf, rides, pedal boats, and much more) and aquatic sports centers (where one can dedicate themselves to scuba diving, snorkeling, fishing trips, water skiing, sailing, and even cruises).
Let’s not forget the lighthouse, a symbol of Negril, which offers breathtaking views especially at sunset thanks to the warm tropical colors.
To fully enjoy the Jamaican location, it is recommended to immerse oneself in the rhythm of reggae music, savor the local cuisine with Anglo-Indian influence (especially for the use of curry), and, why not, to ‘negrilize’ your look (especially your hair) with beads and shells typically used by the locals.
Negril: Jamaica on Seven Miles Beach
Negril is one of the newest tourist destinations in Jamaica, located on the western tip of the island immersed in the Caribbean Sea. Although its history is centuries old, Negril only became well known in the second half of the 1900s.
