The Natural History Educational District Museum of Niscemi was founded in 1989 with the aim of creating a strongly educational facility to illustrate the naturalistic and geographical aspects of central-southern Sicily and its reserves. Part of the museum is dedicated to geography and paleogeography and to fossils from the Niscemi and Caltagirone area. Significant space is then given to illustrating the environment of Sughereta and the San Pietro Forest, with materials related to reptiles, mammals, birds, and insects. Some dioramas finally recreate the natural environment of the “Macconi” of Gela, the dune formations that separate the inland coast from the sea, of which unfortunately little remains today.
