The Rocca Albornoz, home to the National Archaeological Museum of Viterbo, whose last three sections are currently being completed, was built in 1354 by Cardinal Gil Alvarez Carrillo de Albornoz. After a series of destructions and renovations, in 1506 Pope Julius II called Bramante, who was responsible for the courtyard and the central fountain. Following the latest war devastations, the restoration carried out by the Civil Engineering Corps from 1960 to 1979 was overseen by the Lazio Heritage Superintendency together with the Archaeological Superintendency for Southern Etruria, which designated the structure as a museum seat. Currently, the ground floor hosts the “Etruscan Architecture in the Viterbo Area” section, featuring artifacts from the Swedish excavations of Acquarossa and S. Giovenale, through a series of interesting reconstructions of archaic Etruscan houses, largely with original elements. On the first floor, artifacts from the Etruscan-Roman center of Musarna are exhibited, including the exceptional mosaic with an inscription in the Etruscan alphabet and the sculptural and architectural decoration from the theater of Ferento, featuring the cycle of the Muses.
