In addition to hosting Rome, the capital of Italy and regional capital, Lazio is also home to the world’s smallest state: Vatican City. The region consists not only of Rome but also the provinces of Frosinone, Latina, Rieti, and Viterbo, all medium-sized towns.

In Lazio are some well-known volcanic lakes: Lake Bolsena, Lake Vico, Lake Nemi, Lake Bracciano, and Lake Albano. The latter is nestled in the Castelli Romani area, a series of hills southeast of Rome, a retreat chosen by Popes for their summer residence at Castel Gandolfo, but also a region known for typical gastronomic products, such as the famous porchetta di Ariccia.

Regarding the coastal area, Lazio is characterized by low sandy beaches, with the only exceptions being Circeo and Gaeta. Still on the sea theme, off the coast of the region lies the Pontine Archipelago.

The inland area is characterized by hilly zones gradually rising to the mountainous area that extends into Abruzzo and reaches towards Umbria; the highest mountain in Lazio is Terminillo at 2213 meters, while all other peaks are relatively modest in height. It was said that in Lazio the countryside also offers beautiful glimpses and opportunities for vacations, just think of the bucolic landscapes of the Maremma Laziale. So, there is an embarrassment of choice to visit Lazio, a region rich in history and natural beauty.
