La Rocca Albornoz, headquarters of the National Archaeological Museum of Viterbo, whose last three sections are currently being completed, was built in 1354 by Cardinal Gil Alvarez Carrillo de Albornoz. After a series of destructions and renovations, Julius II in 1506 called Bramante, who is responsible for the courtyard and the central fountain. After the last war devastations, the recovery carried out by the Civil Engineering from 1960 to 1979 was overseen by the Lazio B.A.A. Superintendency together with the Archaeological Superintendency for Southern Etruria, which designated the structure as a museum headquarters. Currently, the ground floor houses the “Etruscan Architecture in the Viterbo area” section, with artifacts from the Swedish excavations of Acquarossa and S. Giovenale, through a series of interesting reconstructions of archaic Etruscan houses, with largely original elements. On the first floor, artifacts from the Etruscan-Roman center of Musarna are exhibited, from which comes the exceptional mosaic with inscription in the Etruscan alphabet and the sculptural and architectural decoration from the theater of Ferento, featuring the cycle of the Muses.
