The museum was founded in 1817 by Count Michele della Torre Valsassina (1757-1844), a scholar who conducted important excavation campaigns in Cividale and the surrounding area in the early 1800s, funded by Emperor Francis I of Austria. Today, it is housed in the Palazzo dei Provveditori Veneti, built in the 16th century by Andrea Palladio. On the ground floor is the lapidary section with artifacts dating from the Roman era to the Renaissance.
The first floor, after a section concerning Iulium Carnicum (Zulio), is dedicated to the Lombards, with very important evidence of this civilization (goldsmith work, funerary sets) found in Cividale and other locations of the Lombard Duchy of Friuli.
