The museum is located within the Altinate archaeological area, which bears witness to the Roman city of Altinum situated along the Via Annia and near the Venetian lagoon. In July 2015, a new museum was inaugurated in a renovated rural complex, which includes the protohistoric, Roman, late antique-early medieval sections and the one related to the emporium sanctuary in the Fornace locality, highlighting its role as the main commercial port of the ancient Veneti.
