The Museum of Roman Civilization is currently closed – along with the Astronomical Planetarium Museum – in anticipation of renovation works to upgrade the building to current standards. Interventions aimed at improving the museum for better accessibility.
The Museum of Roman Civilization has a unique character within the vast and complex panorama of Rome’s museums. In fact, the materials it houses – whose current collection is the result of the combination of items gathered during the 1911 Archaeological Exhibition, the Museum of the Roman Empire, and the Augustan Exhibition of Romanity – mostly consist of reproductions: casts of statues, busts, inscriptions, reliefs, and full-scale parts of buildings; models reconstructing monuments and architectural complexes of Rome and the provinces of the Roman Empire; and evidence of the so-called “material culture” (furnishings, household objects, work tools, and so on).
The Museum of Roman Civilization was opened to the public at its current location on April 21, 1955.
