The complex housing the museum is an ancient convent with an attached church, dedicated to Saint Francis of Assisi, founded in 1232. Due to the earthquake of July 30, 1627, it was rebuilt, expanding southwest towards the ancient city walls. The structure underwent further renovations in the first half of the eighteenth century. With the suppression of the Franciscan order, the complex was assigned to a variety of uses different from its original intent. From 1799 to 1806, part of the convent was used as barracks for French and Austrian troops. From 1809 to 1810, it served as a temporary Town Hall and later as an institute for abandoned children. In the early twentieth century, the entire complex was restored and used during the Second World War as a military district. Since 1989, it has housed the Civic Museum, the Historical Archive, and the A. Minuziano Library. Services: guided tours conducted by art historians and archaeologists; educational workshops and games for children; training courses for teachers and students; organization and management of cultural events and conferences; meetings with authors and book presentations; production of editorial products and catalogs; tourist orientation service at the “Passione Barocca” info-point.
