Since 1936, the Museum has been housed in the evocative rooms of the 18th-century De Nicastri – Cavalli palace, in the heart of the city’s historic center; a building that has undergone decisive renovation and safety enhancement interventions, where the museum path was renewed, as it still reflected a 19th-century museographic vision. A complex restoration and musealization project, therefore, altered the internal layout of the building, expanding the exhibition spaces, providing a room equipped for conferences and one for temporary exhibitions, accessible to everyone, with particular attention to children, the elderly, and the differently-abled. The Museum displays few containers for objects which, when possible, are left free of display cases for a more direct view, as the structure supports an idea of an open Museum, a place to stop and return to, to come to read and study (in the library specialized in archaeology and the city’s history or at the bookshop at the entrance), to plan initiatives together (with Schools, Universities, and citizens), and to work on objects (in the first intervention and artifact restoration laboratory).
