Istituted in 1884 in the municipal headquarters of the Temple of San Giovanni al Sepolcro with the intention of housing the numerous artifacts from the city excavations, the Museum soon became a reference point for local archaeology. The first headquarters soon became inadequate, so it was decided, by the Provincial Administration, to recover the spaces left by the old Hospital adjacent to the Cathedral to be used as the museum’s seat. During the works, interesting findings were made underground. The new museum was opened to the public in 1958 and, in addition to the civic collection, the numerous antiquities that emerged during building interventions in the historic center and in the towns of the Province were gathered there. Meanwhile, as the spaces already destined for offices became free, the museum was able to find new rooms and spaces for exhibitions. The so-called portico of the Templar knights, completed with a modern imitation section (1954), serves as the entrance. The new headquarters, inaugurated in the first months of 2009, is developed through a visit path that, from the external portico, extends over two floors leading the visitor to discover the civilizations that succeeded each other in the occupation of the territory, from prehistory to the Roman period.
