The museum was established as a permanent exhibition of Casentino Archaeology on the initiative of the Casentino Archaeological Group. It has since evolved into a Casentino archaeology museum, enriched with new artifacts on loan from the Superintendent. It presents the settlement patterns in the valley through three historical sections. The first illustrates the ancient fossil fauna that lived on the shores of the vanished Villafranchian lake, and the series of prehistoric lithic sites. The second documents the Etruscan presence through the reconstruction of the first hut villages, the evidence of the complex buildings found, and places of worship, including the famous deposit of the Lake of the Idols and the remains of the Socana temple. Recently, materials from the 2003 excavations related to the important Etruscan sanctuary of the Lake of the Idols have also been exhibited. Finally, the Roman presence is illustrated with the rooms of a rural villa in the area. The exhibition solutions include placing symbolic objects within particular environmental reconstructions and hyper-realistic scenic realizations.
