Founded in 1568 through the initiative of Ulisse Aldrovandi, after various relocations it found its permanent location at the ancient Collegio Ferrerio. The total area is about two hectares, and more than five thousand specimens of local and exotic plants are cultivated there. There are three greenhouses: two house tropical plants (mainly ferns, orchids, bromeliads, and trees of alimentary interest), while the third hosts a collection of succulents. Other sections of the Garden include the medicinal plants area, the ornamental area, the woodland park, and the sector with reconstructions of natural environments. The first core, called the Garden of Simples, originated in 1568 in the courtyard area of Palazzo d’Accursio, in the space that was occupied in 1925 by the Sala Borsa designed by Edoardo Collamarini, initiated by Ulisse Aldrovandi (1522-1605), a professor of natural philosophy at the University of Bologna, and founder—in 1556—of the natural history museum. Since 1803, it has extended over more than two hectares of land between the city gates of San Donato and Mascarella, where over five thousand specimens of local and exotic plants are cultivated. Several thematic areas are set up here: medicinal plants, ornamental plants, the woodland park, and the reconstruction of various natural habitats. Among the species in the ground are Ginkgo biloba (female) and Magnolia grandiflora. Particularly noteworthy are the three greenhouses that host tropical and succulent plants.
