Founded in 1568 at the initiative of Ulisse Aldrovandi, after various relocations it found its final location at the ancient Collegio Ferrerio. The total area amounts to about two hectares and on it more than five thousand specimens of local and exotic plants are cultivated. There are three greenhouses: two house tropical plants (mainly ferns, orchids, bromeliads, and trees of food interest), while the third hosts the collection of succulents. Other areas of the Garden include the medicinal plants area, the ornamental area, the park woodland, and the section of natural habitat reconstructions. The first nucleus, called the “Orto dei Semplici,” originated in 1568 in the courtyard area of Palazzo d’Accursio, in the space that in 1925 was occupied by the Sala Borsa designed by Edoardo Collamarini, at the initiative of Ulisse Aldrovandi (1522-1605), professor of natural philosophy at the University of Bologna, and creator – in 1556 – of the natural history museum. Since 1803, it extends over more than two hectares of land between the city gates of San Donato and Mascarella, where more than five thousand specimens of local and exotic plants are cultivated. Here several thematic areas have been set up: medicinal plants, ornamental plants, the park woodland, and the reconstruction of various natural environments. Among the species in the ground are Ginkgo biloba (female) and Magnolia grandiflora. Of particular interest are the three greenhouses that house tropical and succulent plants.
