The ancient city of Compsa, which held the status of municipium assigned to the Galeria tribe, appears in the account of the historian Livy who narrates its defection in favor of Hannibal in 216 BC and its reconquest two years later by Fabius Maximus. The remains of the Roman city have emerged beneath the ruins of the modern town of Conza, which was almost completely destroyed by the 1980 earthquake. A project of excavation, restoration, and enhancement is bringing to light a complex architectural stratification that represents the palimpsest of over 2000 years of history.
