Art and Sea in Sicily: Fiumara d’Arte

The blend of art and nature also gives rise to open-air galleries on the islands. In particular, in Sicily, where, 25 years ago, the industrialist Antonio Presti created, in the Messina area, Fiumara d’Arte, a park of large sculptures signed by masters of contemporary Italian sculpture, located along the barren course of the Tusa river down to the sea.

The route winds tangentially to picturesque villages such as Santo Stefano di Camastra, Castel di Lucio, Castel di Tusa, and climbs up the mountains bordering the Nebrodi and Madonie, offering views of works like La Materia poteva non esserci by Pietro Consagra, two abstract figures facing each other without touching, forming a mysterious hieroglyph in concrete 18 meters high.
Or like Energia Mediterranea by Pietro di Palma, a huge blue wave in concrete inflated by the wind. Or again, Il Labirinto di Arianna by Italo Lanfredini, a spiral path that, without any chance of getting lost, leads to a central area where an olive tree grows, a symbol of peace and fertility. The itinerary culminates with the Monumento a un poeta morto by Tano Festa, on the beach of Villa Margi, nicknamed by locals La Finestra sul mare, a gigantic blue frame 20 meters tall, framing a slice of horizon made of sky and sea, beyond which the gaze stretches into infinity.
