Travel conditions

  • Due to the wide distribution of hotels in Iceland, we recommend planning this self-drive itinerary based on your chosen accommodation.
  • Driving in Iceland is generally straightforward, but most secondary and interior roads are gravel. Snow can make driving challenging at certain times of year, so rent a 4×4 vehicle. Many roads are closed in winter, but this is also when you can visit the incredible ice caves. Pay close attention to speed limits: fines for violations are high. You must drive with headlights on at all times. Using GPS and/or a good internet connection is recommended, as road signs may be unclear or lacking.
  • Triple rooms in Europe typically have two single beds or one double bed, plus a folding bed for the third person—this can be uncomfortable. Triple rooms are not recommended when avoidable.
