These are the hallmarks of the “perfect trip” for Italians according to CartOrange, Italy’s largest travel consultancy, known for pioneering tailored trip planning to match every traveler’s tastes and needs.
Here are 10 up-and-coming destinations highlighted by CartOrange, featuring some of the most original experiences in each location.
1 South Africa: Unexpected Nature and Wines
South Africa tops the 2018 list thanks to its incredibly diverse experiences, from wildlife watching to food and wine tours. “You can explore vastly different landscapes,” says Gianpaolo Romano. Stony Point Nature Reserve is home to one of the world’s largest colonies of African penguins, and whales can be spotted along the coast from June to November. In Hermanus—a beautiful town set between mountains and sea—southern right whales swim close to shore during the southern winter months. The Cape Town area also surprises wine lovers: “The Elgin Valley, with its family-run wineries and typical Farm Stalls—local farm shops—is ideal for an authentic gastronomic journey,” Romano adds.

2 Bali (Indonesia): Sports and Traditions With the Locals
One of 2018’s trendiest destinations, Bali offers the perfect mix of active and relaxing travel. CartOrange recommends trekking or cycling through Bali’s rice paddies and rural villages, horseback riding along Saba’s volcanic beaches, rafting the Ayung Valley, and enjoying panoramic lunches in Ubud with stunning views of the Jatiluwih rice terraces. “Indonesia’s rich culture and traditions will fascinate anyone interested in authentic local life,” says Romano. Standout experiences for travelers include visiting Tabanan village and its bustling market, along with the Subak Museum dedicated to traditional farming tools. There’s also the chance to see a local school and a traditional house, and even learn how to cultivate rice.

3 Thailand: Romance Takes Center Stage
Thailand has been a favorite with Italians for years because of its “affordable luxury.” “It’s great for a romantic getaway,” says Romano. On the beaches of Koh Samui, couples can enjoy candlelit dinners, day trips by boat to idyllic snorkeling spots, sunset cruises, and spa treatments. Bangkok’s urban luxury is also perfect for couples. The ultimate experience, according to CartOrange? Diving at Hat Yai Island, accessible from Trang, where you’ll find extraordinary underwater caves with 30-metre-long stalactites—a truly unforgettable adventure.

4 Canada: Untouched Nature and an Alternative Carnival
Canada is gaining attention among those seeking pristine wilderness, combined with high living standards. “Canada’s two sides offer a variety of experiences,” explains Gianpaolo Romano, “from wildlife encounters on Zodiac trips from Tofino to black bear and whale watching, to local life in sugar shacks near Montreal and Quebec.” Canada’s also exciting in winter: “A unique event is Quebec City’s Winter Carnival, held since 1954 from late January to mid-February. Enjoy nighttime parades, dog sledding, snow rafting, ice fishing, snowmobile competitions, and galas with traditional dancing,” Romano notes.

5 Iceland: Movie-Like Landscapes and Hot Spring Relaxation
Long off the beaten tourist path, Iceland is now being discovered by more travelers, yet remains ideal for those who want a true escape into wild, almost lunar landscapes—many of which have featured in films and TV shows like Game of Thrones. But Iceland isn’t only for extreme travelers: “Anyone worried about the cold can relax in numerous geothermal pools and hot springs,” Romano says. “You can soak in outdoor spas and enjoy Reykjavik’s lively city life.”

6 Namibia: In the Desert, Under the Stars
Namibia stands out among African destinations for being safe and accessible. It offers incredible natural beauty, and where you stay can be a highlight itself. “For example, we recommend Sossusvlei Desert Lodge, near the Namib Desert, considered one of the world’s top lodges for its services and attention to detail—from décor and cuisine to the outstanding staff,” says Gianpaolo Romano. Ten stone-built bungalows hug the mountainside, seamlessly blending into the desert landscape, with panoramic windows ensuring every view takes in the dramatic surroundings. On the roof, a wide skylight lets you gaze at the exceptional star-filled sky—so impressive that there’s even an on-site observatory.

7 Vietnam: Aromas, Colors and Street Food
Vietnam is 2018’s rising star for foodies, pristine landscapes, and warm local people. “Hanoi is perfect for tasting every kind of street food while mingling with locals, exploring the old quarter’s maze of street stalls, mopeds, vendors, and a riot of colors, sounds, and inviting aromas,” says Gianpaolo Romano. Other CartOrange experiences that combine food and culture include excursions to floating markets like Cai Rang, or cycling around Cai Thia, with lunch in a local’s home.

8 Russia: Still a Land of Discovery
Russia continues to fascinate and remains largely unknown to many travelers. Beyond western Russia’s classic destinations—St. Petersburg, Moscow, and the Golden Ring—there are vast, untouched landscapes, silent and mystical. “Places like Lake Baikal, where waves freeze in motion, and remote regions of Karelia, Altay, and Krasnoyarsk,” explains Romano. Vladivostok, with its colorful houses and almost perpetual twilight, is reached via the legendary Trans-Siberian Railway. The 2018 FIFA World Cup is a great opportunity to discover this destination.

9 Aruba: A Mix of Diverse Experiences
Aruba is a multifaceted island: one Caribbean side with secluded Eagle Beach, and another colonial side with the capital Oranjestad. “It may be small, but Aruba packs in experiences to suit every taste,” say Gianpaolo Romano. The island’s western tip offers all the comforts—large hotels, serviced beaches, and a vibrant commercial district. There’s also a wild, untamed side, ideal for nature adventures, though not for swimming.

10 Malta: All About Culture
No list of top 2018 destinations would be complete without the city named European Capital of Culture: Malta, with Valletta. “Countless events will animate the island in 2018, from music and theater to art and literature,” Romano explains. Highlights include the February Carnival, the Malta International Music Festival in April-May, and the Valletta Green Festival when Piazza San Ġorġ becomes an open-air greenhouse. There are theme weeks too, with events dedicated to fashion, rock, jazz, and art. For a tranquil stay, the island of Gozo combines beautiful beaches with a rich, authentic atmosphere.
