For years there has been talk of de-seasonalizing tourist flows, in some cases to combat the excess demand in certain destinations, in others to move beyond the logic of purely seaside tourism. The model based solely on summer beach vacations no longer holds up. Tourism operators, who are increasingly struggling, know this well, and destinations are adapting.

Jesolo, a seaside resort just steps from Venice, is no exception and, through its mayor, sets out the guidelines for its tourism offer. “Seaside tourism remains our core business,” stated the mayor of the lagoon town, “but it is necessary to diversify the types of experiences guests can enjoy.”

There are three main topics Jesolo is focusing on to move beyond mere beach holidays:environment, culture e sport. Will it be able to attract major events to the city? This is the challenge that the Jesolo administration is taking on, which is based on several “milestones.”

Cycling tourism

Cycling tourism is a true challenge for Jesolo, which places this segment within what it more broadly calls “environmental tourism.” But how much is the Italian cycling tourism market worth? It is worth around 7.7 billion euros and 77.6 million visitors, according to ISNART 2018 data (the National Institute of Tourism Research). Jesolo wants to carve out a good share of this market, so much so that it has launched a program of five cycling and pedestrian routes, totaling around 20 kilometers, to allow guests to discover the territory and its peculiarities. The first two kilometers, along Via M. L. King, are already under construction, and planning continues on the other four routes.

Culture

Italian data on cultural tourism are more than encouraging. In 2018 it attracted 55 million visitors to the Bel Paese, generating revenues of 21 billion euros, according to a study conducted by CISET, the International Centre for Tourism Economics Studies. Jesolo has launched a program to expand the offer of the Ancient Walls archaeological area. In particular, the city is focusing on the creation of three museums: the Civic Museum of Natural History, the Great War Museum, and the Museum of the Walls’ Artifacts.

Sport

Sport is an activity that knows no seasons. Furthermore, according to CISET, the International Centre for Tourism Economics Studies, sports tourism in Italy was worth 355 million euros in 2016, with 3.3 million overnight stays and 887,000 foreign tourists. Jesolo boasts several sports facilities, such as the stadium and, especially, the Palasport, which can host over 4,000 people. This may have convinced administrators to strongly focus on this sector in order to go beyond the seasonality of tourism limited only to seaside bathing.

Jesolo is a town that offers different accommodation options. You can freely choose between conventional hotels such as the Hotel Nettuno, for example, or B&Bs and other extra-hotel facilities. This accommodation capacity has led the town, following the example of what is being tried in other Italian tourist destinations, to make Jesolo a place to be experienced in all seasons.
