There were those who swore that the winter season could bring a wave of positivity in a year, 2020, that will go down in history for very different reasons. And the Christmas Markets, especially in the Alpine region, have long been a tourist attraction.

The organizers of the Trento Christmas Markets, Bolzano, Merano, etc., and all over South Tyrol tried to keep alive an event that drives the economy and tourism. However, the uncertainty, along with the new directives from the DPCM of October 18 banning food and wine stands (which also attracted people to the other stalls), drove organizers to throw in the towel: this year the Christmas markets will not take place.

The official announcement of the cancellation of the South Tyrol Christmas Markets came from governor Arno Kompatscher, who stated, “at this moment the priority is to guarantee the functioning of schools and businesses, which is why we are giving up everything that is not essential,” forgetting that tourism is also a business.

In 2019, the markets generated over €776 million thanks to the 12 million visitors who crowded the 556 markets throughout Italy, with more than 28,000 exhibitors.

And now? There is no plan B, although some are considering a scaled-down celebration, just to lift people’s spirits. But for now, that alternative is just a not-so-encouraged hypothesis.

So, the only certainty remains the cancellation of all the South Tyrol and Trento Christmas Markets to which, soon, all of Trentino’s markets could also be added.
