Alitalia aims to offer flights to and from Italy entirely safely with AOKpass, the Covid negativity certification.
ICC AOKpass also arrives in Italy on Alitalia flights. The application, born from the collaboration between the International Chamber of Commerce, International SOS, and SGS, was the first “travel pass” digital used by a national immigration authority to verify the Covid-19 status of arriving travelers, on a flight from Japan to Singapore in December 2020.
The system is now active in Italy as well and will allow passengers bound for New York on Alitalia Covid-Tested flights to present a digital negative certificate from a rapid antigen Covid-19 test at check-in, increasing passenger safety and saving time during travel procedures.
The new travel procedure by Rome Airports and Alitalia is simple: once the AOKpass application is downloaded on the passenger’s mobile device and after performing the test at Fiumicino Airport, travelers will receive the result through a QR code that securely authenticates and stores the negative result on the device. At the time of boarding the flight to New York, passengers can therefore use their digital health credentials checked by boarding assistants who scan the QR code directly.
The digitization of this process – in collaboration with doctors from USMAF of the Italian Ministry of Health – is a further step forward in creating new protocols for safe access to aircraft, a procedure started in September 2020, in partnership with the Lazio Region, with the Alitalia Rome-Milan Covid-Tested flights, and continued in December with the opening of “quarantine free” flights from the United States.
As an alternative to the self-isolation system, which is difficult to monitor and penalizing for healthy individuals, in the coming months passengers will increasingly undergo rapid or molecular tests before boarding, especially for long-haul destinations. With the progress of vaccinations, there could soon be the possibility to show a vaccination certificate to board safely without restrictions. The digitization of these processes begins today with the use of the ICC AOKpass and will be further developed through a series of health services and authorized travel cards.
Fiumicino’s “Leonardo da Vinci” airport is considered one of the safest in the world, having received the maximum 5-star rating from Skytrax for anti-Covid health protocols, the Health Accreditation from Aci, and being chosen, for the third consecutive year, by Aci Europe as the best airport in Europe precisely for its virus containment measures. All Alitalia aircraft are also disinfected daily with highly disinfectant products, and thanks to HEPA filters and vertical circulation, the air onboard is renewed every three minutes and is 99.7% pure.
