L’archeological area of Grumentum, a flourishing Lucanian center conquered by Rome during the 3rd century BC, represents a unique example in Basilicata of a Roman urban layout preserved almost entirely to this day.
The visit takes place in a landscape setting of exceptional charm in which the public and private spaces of the Roman city are arranged, still outlined by the regularity of the ancient street axes. From the theater you reach the Italic temple, the domus with mosaics and, along the paving of the decumanus, the Forum area with the public buildings – civil and religious: Capitolium, Caesareum, Porticus, Curia and Basilica. The route then continues to the imperial baths and the monumental amphitheater, strategically positioned on the eastern edges of the hill.
