The Museum “Culture and Popular Music of the Peloritani”, active since 1996, is configured as an exemplary experience for the preservation and enjoyment of a significant portion of the heritage of Sicilian oral tradition culture.
In addition to reconstructing the long and complex organological history of popular musical instruments, arranged according to the classic families of aerophones, chordophones, membranophones, and idiophones, the exhibition path highlights, with the help of a rich iconographic apparatus, informative-educational cards, and video supports, the typical characteristics of each instrument, namely the occasions of use, the ceremonial functions performed, the construction methods, and the tuning techniques.
The evocative journey through the instrumental sounds of tradition, which develops in four rooms, also offers a multimedia space for in-depth study, divided into a bibliographic section, a video station, and a digital area for listening to instrumental and vocal repertoires of celebration and work.
