Il Museo, born with the purpose of recalling the civil and cultural tradition of the City and its territory, and of continuing and developing it through research and studies, was inaugurated on June 28, 1991. It is located on the second floor of the Palazzo Forte and includes: – a significant collection of local ceramic production from the 12th to the 21st century – newspapers and journalism in Ariano – Historical Archive of the Municipality – Printed editions, rare and valuable from the 15th and 16th centuries – Library – Photographic archive – Conference room. The enhancement of the section “of the ancient popular maiolica of Ariano” constitutes the main objective of the Museum, which currently presents a collection of ceramic artifacts of about 250 pieces. To these faiences must be added the finds that abundantly flow to the Museum, dating from the 9th century to the late 1400s, coming from sporadic discoveries and excavations conducted in neighborhood landfills, recently identified along the ancient city walls. The Museum, having become a valid cultural reference point on a daily basis, receives continuous visits from scholars, students, expert collectors, art critics, ceramists, and enthusiasts from everywhere. Eve BoorsooK, of The Harvard University Center for Italian Renaissance Studies, friend and collaborator of the Whitehouse, amazed, dreamy, and grateful, left this memory: “I write to you the great joy that you and your Museum have given me. The ceramics radiate joy and celebration of life expressed with very elegant invention, everything is exhibited with so much affection, care, and good taste: a model for everyone.” The Museum thus created does not have as its sole purpose the collection and preservation of testimonies, but also aims to raise and discuss problems, communicating and stimulating reflections and evaluations, always oriented towards creating opportunities and initiatives to support artisanal activities.
