Il Museo Bodoniano, inaugurated in 1963, is the oldest printing museum in Italy, housed on the top floor of the Biblioteca Palatina in the Farnese palace of the Pilotta. It documents the activity of the printer Giambattista Bodoni, born in Saluzzo in 1740 and active in Parma, at the Ducal Printing House and in his own Printing Workshop, from 1768 until his death in 1813. The Museum exhibits a rich collection of Bodoni prints, an extensive correspondence, and the precious collection of tools from Giambattista Bodoni’s Workshop. The exhibition is organized into six sections, useful to illustrate the life and works of the printer, the history of the book from manuscript to the present day, the evolution of the printed page and typeface, the history of printing in Parma from the 15th to the 20th century. Of great interest is the section dedicated to Bodoni’s workshop, which displays punches, matrices, molds for casting type, and other tools that explain the printing process.
The Museum offers the public a rich modern library containing valuable works of Italian publishing, studies of graphic and editorial design, essays and monographs on Bodoni, books on the history and techniques of printing. It also promotes studies and research in the field of graphic and typographic art and regularly organizes exhibitions, conferences, lectures, seminars, and educational visits aimed at schools of all levels.
