La Grotta Azzurra is a well-known cave located in the municipality of Anacapri, on the island of Capri in the province of Naples.
The cave has an opening partially submerged by the sea and depending on the tide cycle, access can be more or less complicated.
The Roman emperors who spent their holidays on the island are said to have used it as a private swimming pool; in particular, it seems that Tiberius had a passage built between his villa and the cave, although if this tunnel really existed today, it would have collapsed, thus inaccessible. In any case, it became known starting from 1826, when it was visited by the German artist August Kopisch on the advice of Angelo Ferraro, a local fisherman.
Depending on the sea level, the guides on rowboats ask tourists to bend down at the entrance; the same guides, speaking and singing, highlight the echoes and sounds of the site.
The best feature of the Blue Grotto is, however, the special play of colors created by the external light that penetrates through its submerged part, which can vary at different times of the day and with changing weather conditions.
