Since 1946 it has been the residence of the Bargellini family, who lived there even during the years when Piero Bargellini was mayor of Florence.
In 1966, the year of the flood that severely damaged the entire historic center of the city, Bargellini was a figure very close to the inhabitants and opened the palace, although damaged by the waters of the Arno river, to host those in need of shelter.
