The Institute, established as a Section of the State Archive by Ministerial Decree of June 7, 1941, in application of the law of December 22, 1939, no. 2006, became a State Archive following the Presidential Decree of September 30, 1963, no. 1409. The Section incorporated archival collections, largely originating from the community chancery of Arezzo, which Ubaldo Pasqui, a local history scholar, had gathered since 1885 into a single, large documentary complex.
The main nuclei were made up of the archive of the ancient Municipality, archives of numerous judicial bodies of the Tuscan state, a number of collections belonging to religious corporations, hospitals, church works and other city institutions, as well as various parchments, cadastral acts, and assorted documents.
Palazzo Albergotti
The Palace is part of a building complex, formed by the consolidation of buildings belonging to families of the Arezzo nobility of the Guelph faction (Camaiani, Sassoli, Albergotti). These buildings had been constructed along the terminal stretch of Borgo Maestro (the current Corso Italia). In fact, the building – dating back to the 14th century – is located at the intersection between Corso Italia and Via degli Albergotti and initially belonged to this powerful family, as did all the major constructions along the street of the same name. The corner portion, from the 13th century, derives from a remnant of a preexisting tower.
The building, extensively remodeled in the Renaissance period, was restored at the beginning of the 20th century; the latest intervention includes decorations by Galileo Chini and the creation of the entrance from Via degli Albergotti. From this entrance there is current access to the rooms of the State Archive, whose collections of acts and documents occupy the entire structure. On the lower side (from the Corso Italia side) stands the characteristic Tower of Bigazza, erected in the 14th century, later “cut off” and then raised, with a questionable 20th-century intervention.
