La fascia costiera di circa 400 Km si presenta bassa e fertile. Il clima, caldo e umido nelle regioni basse, diventa più mite e asciutto verso l’interno in rapporto alle altitudini. Le differenti condizioni climatiche e di altitudine favoriscono diversi tipi di vegetazione. Lungo le coste crescono foreste di palme, mangrovie, teak e sandalo, mentre nelle aree pianeggianti la savana rappresenta l’ambiente principale. Qui è facile imbattersi in elefanti, zebre, giraffe, rinoceronti, leoni, leopardi che per il pericolo di estinzione sono protetti in riserve e parchi nazionali. Varie sono inoltre le specie di uccelli e di rettili presenti fra cui il troviamo il pitone e il cobra.
