The coastal strip of about 400 km is low and fertile. The climate is warm and humid in the low regions, becoming milder and drier inland with increasing altitude. The different climatic and altitude conditions favor various types of vegetation. Along the coasts grow forests of palms, mangroves, teak, and sandalwood, while in the plains the savannah is the main environment. Here it’s easy to encounter elephants, zebras, giraffes, rhinoceroses, lions, leopards, which, due to the danger of extinction, are protected in reserves and national parks. There are also various species of birds and reptiles present, including the python and cobra.
