Climate of France

The climate of France is generally temperate, along the Atlantic coast and in the north it is colder and rainier while in the inland areas harsh winters alternate with hot summers.

The flora is mostly made up of temperate broadleaf forests such as chestnut, beech, hornbeam, and oak. The coasts are covered by the typical Mediterranean maquis. The fauna is varied: several protected species can be found such as the chamois, brown bear, otter, stork; the wolf and wild boar survive in some wooded areas.

Well represented is the birdlife with a wide variety of species, both resident and migratory: the Camargue is home among other things to protected colonies of flamingos. The most common fish species in the marine waters are cod, herring, mackerel, sardine, and tuna.
