France Guide: What to See

France is located in Western Europe and its shape resembles a hexagon. It is bordered to the northwest by the English Channel and the North Sea, to the west by the Atlantic Ocean, and to the southwest by the Tyrrhenian Sea.

The territory of France from a morphological point of view can be divided into three areas: in the south-east it is crossed by rather remarkable reliefs including the Alps with Mont Blanc, the central-southern part is occupied by a large plateau, and to the north-northwest extends a vast flat and slightly undulating region.

Climate of France

The climate of France is generally temperate; along the Atlantic coast and in the north it is colder and rainier, while in the interior there are harsh winters alternating with hot summers.

The flora mainly consists of temperate broadleaf forests such as chestnut, beech, hornbeam, and oaks. The coasts are covered by the typical Mediterranean scrub. The fauna is varied: several protected species can be found such as the chamois, brown bear, otter, stork; the wolf and wild boar survive in certain forested areas.

Well represented is the birdlife with a great variety of species, both resident and migratory: the Camargue hosts, among others, protected colonies of flamingos. The most common fish species in marine waters are cod, herring, mackerel, sardine, and tuna.
