La Pinacoteca Nazionale di Cagliari is located in the Cittadella dei musei, a prestigious cultural structure designed in the second half of the twentieth century in the area of the Royal Arsenal from the eighteenth century, in the ancient Castello district. Housed since the late nineteenth century in the Seziate palace, in the nearby Piazza Indipendenza, and closed to the public since the mid-seventies, it found its definitive location in the current seat since 1992. The building that houses it, of rationalist taste and designed by Piero Gazzola, incorporates parts of the Spanish sixteenth-century walls in a happy combination of ancient and modern. Its location at the top of the Cittadella offers visitors an enchanting panoramic view of the city of Cagliari.
The Pinacoteca preserves paintings from the 14th to the 20th century. The fundamental core of the collection consists of retables, large multi-panel altarpieces painted on wood, of Catalan and local school (15th-16th centuries). This collection was formed in the second half of the nineteenth century, following the suppression of ecclesiastical bodies and the acquisition of their heritage by the State. Since the 1920s, a significant ethnographic collection has been added – including fabrics, jewelry, furnishings of Sardinian production (18th-19th centuries) – as well as a core of medieval and modern weapons and ceramics, of Sardinian, Pisan-Ligurian, or Valencian production. Also part of the Pinacoteca is an interesting collection of stone material and local coats of arms (13th-17th centuries), as well as a collection of sculptures, in various materials (12th-19th centuries).
The exhibition route unfolds on three levels: on the upper floor are the oldest paintings, on the intermediate floor the Baroque period paintings, and in the lower floor portraits and landscapes of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Other collections are exhibited on rotation.
