Il museo di Sluderno aims to reflect the ecological, social, and cultural aspects of the Val Venosta. The rural environment is presented in stark contrast to the feudal world of the nearby Castel Coira. The permanent exhibition “Val Venosta arcaica” offers an archaeological collection of the valley, enriched by the findings from “Ganglegg” (1997), dating back to the Bronze Age, Iron Age, and Roman era. Another key thematic area illustrated at the museum is the economy of water. The sophisticated irrigation systems designed to combat the valley’s drought have constituted, since the Middle Ages, the densest network of irrigation channels in the Alpine arc. The museum also deals with several other themes, such as emigration, to which poverty also forced children, called Schwabenkinder because they were sent to work in Swabia, itinerant vendors (Karrner), and finally customs and traditions still alive today. Of particular interest are the visit to the prehistoric settlement of “Ganglegg” (about a 45-minute walk away) and the educational trail along the canal called “Quairwaal,” which runs near the museum.
